Churchgroup and forum Kirche
The commitment of Bremen Christians against the apartheid regime in South Africa goes back to the campaign of Frauenhilfe Bremen “Don’t buy the fruits of apartheid” and “Aktion Bundesschluss” Bremen, of which the former anti-apartheid committed members expanded their contacts to the “Diakonia Councel of Churches“, an association of 16 local churches in the greater Durban area, after the foundation of the partnership association Bremen-Durban1999,
Several mutual visits led to a partnership between the forum Kirche in Bremen and the Diakonia Concil of Churches. The church partnership contributed to the conclusion of an official town twinning between Durban and Bremen in 2011, which was celebrated with Durban’s mayor and many committed people at forum Kirche.
Together the partners promote the churches’ commitment to social justice and the integrity of creation. Their work is ecumenically oriented and focuses on the equal rights of all people.
Both partners independently offer educational programmes to strengthen political participation, overcome social injustice and promote environmental sustainability. Through ecumenical and international cooperation they learn to see global problems from the perspective of the other.
